Some Girl

Image
I think I'm way too into teenage comedies. Some Girls was a delightful little coming-of-age story. The casting was fairly diverse, and the story centers on a black girl, which, traditionally doesn't happen in America unless the whole show is about being black. Or it's a Shonda Rhimes drama. If I had to find a reason for my love of coming-of-age stories it's probably that I feel, sadly, I am still in the middle of mine. It's so fantastical to see people figuring their lives out. Becoming adults. Learning to be prepared and to roll with the punches. Life is always taking jabs, and it lands a few blows at first, but by the end of the series the lead always knows they'll be okay. Things always look bright and hopeful. So here I am, practically a pharmacy with my pills pills pills [mood stabilizer, anxiety reducer, anti-psychotic and high cholesterol (because I eat fucking terribly)] and running around for years with a slight tremor, just waiting to fall apart. ...

Today I Learned What a Broiler Is

Image
I envy people with focus. I was reading recently about innovation and how Einstein considered creativity to be like juggling concepts and true unique thought occurred when two balls that were of the greatest distance collided. I like this imagery- I like the idea of sparks in the collision. I fear that none of my balls ever touch each other. (Insert ultra-juvenile joke about balls touching.) But honestly, the more original voices I find the less my own voice sounds original. Perhaps it is rose tinted perception- we're all equally original. Everyone is interesting and worth a story even in their own mundane way. However, I'd be happier if I felt not as particularly mundane. I also like the idea of thoughts as juggling balls because it would explain my resistance to completing things. The juggling never stops. It's tiring. A break when two balls hit would be a welcome change of pace. Better than to keep the eye constantly spinning as it tracks the balls. I wish balls were...

I Have Been Spending Way Too Much

The title has nothing to do with the post. Right now I am watching Amy Schumer and mourning. The list of shows that got cut from Fall 2015 is coming out and I lose friends every year to the culling. (Television is my only true friend.) With the end of Parks and Recreation and the cancellation of the Mindy Project I feel like female driven comedy took a big hit on network TV this season. This is especially surprising because the season started with so many romcoms- maybe too many romcoms. It is entirely possible that romcoms are a very cheap way of appealing to female viewership (I'm looking at you, Manhattan Love Story .) However, beyond the four romcoms that premiered this season there were several comedies that starred a female lead and two of those female leads were women of color!! That brought female driven comedies starring a woman of color up to three shows. THREE SHOWS TOTAL. And now there is one. Don't get me wrong, Jane the Virgin is fantastic and probably th...

Things I Should Be Doing

Studying. What I am doing: catching up on Jane the Virgin and Last Man on Earth. JtV- terrific as always. Although, I'm still on the fence about Rafael's lips. Sure, he has an AMAZING smile, but resting face very much resembles one of those male Bratz dolls. Is that really the future I want for Jane? Probably. I'd hit that. Like I said- AMAZING smile. I'm a sucker for a great smile. What I would not hit: Last Man on Earth. Even if it were the last man on Earth. I was really intrigued by the concept of a one man sitcom to be honest...primarily because it seemed like such a hard gimmick to pull off. ::SPOILERS:: it does not solely star Will Forte. IT DOES really center on Will Forte and how pathetic he is. At least so far, I've caught up to Episode 6, which I feel is enough time to set the tone of a sitcom. Really the tone for a show should be set by the second or third episode, I think. I wouldn't expect to gain viewership off of the 4th episode. People exp...

Sometimes Its All Red Lights

I've fallen down an anime hole. It's like a rabbit hole but no matter your preferences you still emerge reeking of hyper-nerd. Not the cool post-Cuomo style nerdom that gained traction in the last decade, but the old "let's stuff this kid in a locker, it's acting weird" kind of nerd. I doubt even Amy Schumer could make the quiet thrill of watching hours of sparkly bobble-headed teens discovering their effervescent super-powers and bonding while cross-dressing seem normal. I can't pass this off as "adorkable." But I'll probably never stop. The escape from reality is so much lighter than what American television can offer. My youth was filled with drama and snark so I occasionally drown myself in stories of camaraderie and bonds that cannot be broken by the encroaching terrors of adulthood. American shows marketed to teens are mostly about friendships persevering the cattiness of adolescence. Or they're just mini-soaps. As much as I lo...

Right Now- Top Thoughts

This blog needs some re-formatting. I will get to that when I have more time/motivation. Right now it's hard enough pushing myself to type...which reminds me, I should paint soon. Right now, I should be studying for my first Exam of my rehabilitated college career. Predictably, I have studied about 0.25% today with an average of 5% over the course of the course. If I get any higher than a 70 it will be further proof that life is not fair and I am an implement of it's prejudice. A disturbing position to be aware of as a minority woman. Instead of studying, I am considering how quickly I am going to dump Netflix when HBO unveils it's own streaming service and whether I will make the investment binge watching the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt before I do so. Opportunity cost. In case I did not previously mention, I am taking Macro and Microeconomics right now. My largest problems with the courses are the arrangement of vowels in them and the concept of opportunity cost. It...
